An Open Mind for the Future

My wife, Heidi, and I have lived in North Oaks for 15 years. Like most of you, we didn’t move here by accident. We came because this community offers something rare: its lakes, trees and trails; a night sky filled with stars you can see; a small-town feel; wonderful neighbors; privacy; and safety. North Oaks is the kind of place worth looking after, which is a big part of why I am running for City Council.

But there’s something more. Five years ago our family lost my son-in-law in a tragic accident. The outpouring of support from this community for our daughter, Emily, and her family was profound and humbling. It’s the kind of generosity of spirit you don’t forget. Now that job restrictions that have precluded me from being involved in city government are behind me, I want to give something back to the community that stood by us in our hardest time.

What do I have to offer? A few years back, I graduated summa cum laude from St. Olaf College, went on to Harvard to do graduate work, and then came home to the University of Minnesota Law School. I practiced law with a large Minneapolis law firm, ultimately as a shareholder, for eight years. Then I made a change – I resigned that position to pursue a career in financial services, in which I have served clients for 34 years.

The complementary disciplines of law and financial planning have prepared me well to serve the residents of North Oaks. I know my way around statutes, ordinances, and regulations, as well as an operating budget. I understand the core questions a council member must always ask: what are we committing to, who pays for it, and can we sustain the obligation without surprises down the road?

I believe every resident should have a voice and a seat at the table as we plan for the future. I’d be honored to join you at that table this November as a city councilperson. Thank you for your vote.
